Tracer Gas Leak Detection

One of the most effective methods for locating concealed leaks in water pipework — a safe hydrogen-nitrogen mix traced above ground to pinpoint the escape point.

How it works

Tracer gas in practice

Once the water supply has been isolated and the pipework prepared, a safe, non-toxic mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen gas is introduced into the system.

Because the tracer gas molecules are significantly smaller than water molecules, they escape through even the smallest defects in the pipework. Using a highly sensitive gas detector, our technician traces the escaping gas above ground to accurately identify the location of the leak.

Tracer gas detection is particularly effective where:

  • Pipework is buried beneath floors or external surfaces
  • Traditional acoustic methods are less effective
  • Leaks are very small or difficult to identify
  • Pipework runs through insulated or complex construction

Good to know

The tracer gas used is completely safe, environmentally friendly, non-flammable in its supplied concentration, and leaves no residue within the pipework.

Tracer gas — your questions

Specific answers about this method. For anything else, call us on 01639 999 999.

Yes. The gas is a non-toxic mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen — environmentally friendly, non-flammable in its supplied concentration, and it leaves no residue in your pipework.

That is exactly where it excels. The gas escapes through the defect and rises through concrete, screed, block paving and tarmac, where our surface detector picks it up with pinpoint accuracy.

Only for the duration of the test on the affected pipework. The supply is isolated, the water drained down, and the tracer gas introduced — we restore everything before we leave.
